Key Performance Areas:
- Management of molecular studies of all funded projects including planning, DNA extraction from nematodes, PCR according to set protocols and molecular characterisation of nematodes in the DALRRD projects.
- Procurement linked to projects.
- Reporting on molecular characterisation and phylogenetic studies.
- Identification of nematodes to isolate specimens.
- Preparation of manuscripts and popular articles.
- Report writing.
- Provide diagnostic services in identification and enumeration of nematodes.
- Assistance with technology transfer initiatives such as training courses.
- Assist with the reporting and compiling of budgets of research projects.
- Ability to conduct fieldwork.
- Disseminate research results as scientific publications, congress presentations and popular articles.
- Contributes to training of students.
- Compliance with general health and safety regulations (demonstrate visible use of safety equipment).
- Ability to work under pressure and handling of high workload at times.
- Be able to handle large volumes of samples, be organised, have time management skills and the ability to work at a steady pace according to seasonal peaks.
- Demonstrate a strong ability to collaborate easily within the team.
- Any other ad hoc tasks that may be reasonable to be assigned to the job incumbents.
Requirements:
- PhD in Nematology, Molecular Biology, or a related field of invertebrates with strong component of phylogenetics.
- Proven experience in molecular characterisation of nematodes.
- Proven experience in nematode research.
- Strong background in phylogenetics of nematodes.
- Design and carry out high-level, complex research experiments independently.
- Good track record of publication is desirable.
- Relevant scientific record.
- A valid B or EB driver’s license.
- Experience working in a research team will be an advantage.
- Good communication skills (Written and Verbal) as illustrated in record of scientific papers and
- presenting at symposia.
- Ability to organise, prioritise and work systematically.
