Facade Engineer needed at Arup

The Opportunity

• Arup’s Façade practice is an enthusiastic, energetic, multi-disciplinary team of designers working with Building Envelopes focused on creating sustainable solutions and effective interventions. It includes engineers, technical specialists, building physicists and architects, all of whom share a passionate interest in building envelope design.
• We have an opportunity for a talented Facade Engineer to join our team in Johannesburg.
• The successful candidate will become a permanent member of our creative, friendly, international team and will work on some of the most exciting buildings in the world including international airports, high rise commercial and residential towers, prominent buildings in cities and international stadia.

In this role you will:

• Develop excellent façade solutions in collaboration with other façade specialists and see these through from concept through tender documents, and mock-ups and testing to fabrication and installation.
• Develop façade designs, prepare details, study materials and systems and contribute to specifications. In later stages of the project, you will be part of a team reviewing the contractor’s design submissions and undertake inspections of fabrication and installation. The role will also include the inspection and investigation of existing buildings. 
• Be part of the wider façade team developing façade design solutions in collaboration with other façade specialists on your projects from concept to implementation, including review and comment on detailed designs generated by specialist façade contractors. 
• Work in a team and will engage directly with our clients, architects, contractors and supply chain.
• Work several projects running in parallel at various stages in the project life.
• Produce drawings, reports, specifications and correspondence and help our project managers to manage time and budget.
• Plan and monitor the use of resources on projects.
• Review technical submissions for compliance with design intent.
• We are looking for an enthusiastic and talented Structural Engineer with excellent design, technical, and software skills who enjoys working collaboratively in multi-professional design teams, taking responsibility for projects from inception to completion to achieve outstanding results.

We are seeking a candidate who: 

• Is a degree qualified Structural Engineer working towards chartership.
• Has a completed portfolio of medium to large scale projects.
• Has breadth of experience in façade design across a range of façade types and new façade materials and technologies.
• Demonstrates a versatile skillset including knowledge of detail design, structural and building physics, testing, inspections and investigations and site experience.
• Is able to inspire clients, quickly win their confidence and give strategic leadership to the façade requirements of their projects.
• Demonstrates strong written and verbal communications skills in English.
