Requirements :

  • MBChB, MMed(Ophth)/FC Ophth, HPCSA registration as Medical Specialist in Ophthalmology. Proof of current registration with the HPCSA 2025/2026.

Duties :

  • The department of Ophthalmology is based at Steve Biko Academic hospital and affiliated with the University of Pretoria. This will be a joint academic post. This is a full time, permanent position for a Head of Department Consultant Ophthalmology at Steve Biko Academic hospital.
  • The candidate should have full registration in ophthalmology with the health professional Council of South Africa.
  • Clinical duties include running ophthalmology clinics and theatres, ophthalmology planning and treatment, participation in multi-disciplinary team meetings, supervision and training of registrars.
  • Academic participation includes participation in research activities, lecturing undergraduate and post graduate students in medical and affiliated fields at all training sites. Duties include compulsory overtime and ward cover.
