Requirements :

  • MBChB or equivalent qualification, Fellowship of the College of Surgeons (SA) or equivalent qualification and Certificate in Colorectal surgery (SA). Proof of current registration with the HPCSA as a Subspecialist in Colorectal surgery.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ appropriate experience after registration as a Medical Specialist. Must demonstrate experience in surgical practice and patient care in the field of colorectal surgery. Strong commitment to teaching and mentorship, with demonstrated experience in an academic setting.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work in a team.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, TRAINING AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Inherent requirement of the job: The successful incumbent may be required to perform commuted overtime in the Department of General Surgery, including evening and weekend duties as required and participation in on-call schedules for emergency cases.

Duties :

  • The post requires the incumbent to provide subspecialist services in colorectal surgery. The incumbent will be expected to perform a wide range of surgical procedures related to colorectal diseases, including but not limited to colorectal cancer surgeries, inflammatory bowel disease surgery and minimally invasive techniques. Conduct thorough assessments, diagnostics and follow-up care for patients with colorectal conditions.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop comprehensive treatment plans tailored to individual patient needs. Ensure adherence to safety protocols and best practices in surgical care. Maintain detailed medical records and document all patient interactions in compliance with hospital policies.
  • Research: The incumbent will be expected to engage in clinical and translational research aimed at advancing the field of colorectal surgery. Contribute to the development of research proposals, grant applications and publications in peer-reviewed journals. Foster collaborations with other departments and institution to enhance research opportunities.
  • Teaching: The incumbent will be expected to provide high-quality education and training to both postgraduate and undergraduate medical students through lectures, hands-on workshops and clinical rotations. Mentor postgraduate surgical registrars, providing guidance on clinical skills, surgical techniques and professional development.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of curricula for surgical education, ensuring alignment with current best practices and advancements in colorectal surgery.
