Education Officer Job at KwaZulu-Natal Museum

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Museum Education:

• Develop and implement appropriate museum-based educational programmes, utilizing objects and audio-visual resources for General Education & Training and Further Education & Training learners, tertiary students and educators, in line with the Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS).
• Conduct after-school programmes to help redress the educational imbalance in previously disadvantaged communities: (Inhouse).
• Carry responsibility for developing, running and administering museum after school programmes (such as the Sabalala Nolwazi Youth Club).
• Develop new audiences (customers): Develop holiday and other in-house craft, art, skills and knowledge-based
• programmes to stimulate and develop activity-based learning to gain new audiences.
• Develop and promote the use of technology to supplement formal educational programmes.
• Work with other institutions: Share skills, resources and materials with other institutions to more effectively promote cultural and natural heritage education.
• Collaborate with other Museum departments to promote the mission of the Museum.
• Departmental administration: Assist the Head of Department in preparing departmental budget and in compiling relevant reports.
• Assist with gallery guiding and support Information Officers.
• Keep up with the evolving methods in museum-based education through reading and participating in conferences and workshops.
• Assist with special activities, workshops and other outdoor activities.

REQUIREMENTS:

• A Bachelor’s degree in Education or similar field, NQF Level 7 qualification, coupled with relevant experience.
• Further training in cultural or natural history/heritage will serve as an advantage. Understanding of the national CAPS policy.
• Understanding of museum education and use of its resources. Lesson planning and presentation skills.
• Computer literacy, good writing, communication and organizing skills. Valid driver’s license (minimum Code B).
