Job Description
- Contributes to technical delivery of engineering excellence through:
- Executing assigned scopes of work.
- Providing discipline expertise to the business.
- Uses technical knowledge to perform engineering assignments and produce a range of engineering deliverables (including more complex tasks) with limited guidance and direction from more senior technical professionals.
- Evaluates, selects, and adapts standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform tasks.
- Fully qualified to execute most standard and straightforward engineering activities, working unsupervised on most aspects of work.
- Under general supervision performs all conventional aspects of design engineering and analysis, acting as document originator.
- Creates and reviews designs, drawings, specifications and other engineering deliverables involving both existing and new technology and applications.
- Problems presented involve new concepts and new and varied issues that demand technical expertise, increased innovations or considerable modifications of precedents.
Responsibilities
- Executes Assigned Scopes of Work:
- Prepare, review, coordinate, check and approve instrumentation and control drawings and specifications, under the direction of the Manager Electrical and Instrumentation Engineering and/or Principal I&C System Engineer.
- Ensure design engineering standards are maintained and adhered to.
- Produce designs in accordance with project, discipline, good practice, company procedural requirements and meets Clients standards.
- Ensure serviceability, safety and operability of designs.
- Provide technical design guidance to project staff on instrumentation & control system designs.
- Utilise project filing system (Sharepoint or other)
- Utilize and enhance instrumentation and control system design systems and processes and ensure their implementation within Instrumentation and Control System discipline.
- Ensure that the plant design is optimal in terms of control systems and networks.
- Attend and/or conduct regular design group meetings in the 3D environment.
- Review and update P&ID drawings with instrumentation and valve requirements.
- Review and comment on documents and drawings from other disciplines.
- Review supplier documentation and drawings for compliance with project specifications.
- Review equipment & installation contractors’ proposals and produce technical adjudications / recommendations.
- Liaise with clients on engineering design issues, as required.
- Attend factory acceptance tests and provide input to supplier’s test documentation.
- Produce site inspections, functionality testing and commissioning documentation.
- Liaise with site staff on engineering design issues, as required.
- Assist with plant installation and commissioning.
- Respond to technical queries from projects, client and site.
- Prepare project close out reports with comparison of design and procurement budgets.
- Ability to travel locally and/or internationally, as required.
- Ability to work and live in hardship locations, as required, when visiting project sites.
- Willingness to work additional (billable) hours when required.
- Providing discipline expertise:
- Conducts problem solving in the area of expertise: problems involve new concepts and new and varied problems to be solved that demand technical expertise, investigation and interpretation
- Develops alternative solutions, identifies risks and benefits
- Develops solutions to non-recurring problems by appraising, interpreting and evaluating various precedents and data.
- Exercises professional judgement in selecting and interpreting information and modifying standard methods and procedures
- May deliver small-scale projects with responsibility for cost, schedule, resource allocation and risk, while working within an established program management plan.
- Provide technical input and support to proposals as required.
Qualifications:
- BSc. Degree, BTech or National Higher Diploma in Electrical Engineering or Control Engineering
- ECSA registration as Professional Engineer or Professional Technologist Engineer (or working towards registration).
Knowledge, skills and experience:
- 4 to 6 years’ working experience in a project engineering environment, preferably within the resources & minerals processing industry in Africa.
- Demonstrates the application of theory in a practical context.
- Working level of competence in the application of standards, processes and procedures and how they are used in work execution.
- Understanding of cost and financial implications of technical decisions made, as these relate to a project.
- Advanced computer literacy skills in MS Office and related software packages.
- Experience in managing relationships with clients, contractors and service providers.
- Excellent English language skills, both verbal and written.
- Shows evidence of ability to guide and mentor others.
