Purpose of Job
- Coordination of Sasol’s mineral rights portfolio ensuring Sasol has access to the necessary rights to prospect and mine and maintains its license to operate. Negotiate, acquire, manage and safeguard prospecting, mining and related rights and ensure legal compliance with applicable mining laws to enable Sasol Mining to successfully conduct their operations.
- Coordinate strategic stakeholder engagement inter alia with the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) and the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS). Provide support to the Regional Operations and Assets Services team related to the acquisition and management of land rights and land access.
Key Accountabilities
- Advise, strategise and provide effective support to the Sasol Group relating to mining legislation and develop strategies to ensure compliance with any legislative changes.
- Coordinate and prepare applications for prospecting rights, mining rights, mining permits, amendments, renewal of rights, transferring or cession of rights and related applications ensuring Sasol secures and safeguards its license to operate and maintains unhindered access to coal reserves.
- Identification of strategic resources, due diligence investigations, third party negotiations to acquire mineral rights, preparation of sale agreements, facilitate payments, preparation of application for cession of rights, lodge applications with Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources and manage the timely approval, notarial execution of right(s), once approved.
- Manage relationships with key stakeholders such as the DMPR, DWS, local authorities, private landowners and/or communities in areas where Sasol Mining’s operations are located.
- Ensure compliance with mining legislation such as the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA), Royalty Act, BBBEE legislation including the Mining Charter, the Mine Health and Safety Act and a good understanding of Spatial and Town Planning legislation.
- Coordination of Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources compliance verification audits.
- Effective management of applications to ensure timely approval by authorities.
- Ensure compliance with Social and Labour Plan targets and associated regulatory engagements.
- Preparation of prescribed annual compliance reports and timely submission of required documentation.
- Coordination of the payment of prescribed prospecting fees and adherence to prospecting work programmes of respective rights. • Registration of rights in the Mineral and Petroleum Titles Registration Office. • Ensure access to land to enable mining and prospecting activities to continue unobstructed.
- Manage updating of Geographic Information System (GIS) and Landfolio rights management system.
- Attend to all MPRDA related enquiries and provide specialist knowledge to project teams in planning new mine developments or mine expansions.
- Establish and maintain a register to track applications for rights and compliance to terms and conditions of rights.
- Ensure that work standards are met according to quality, quantity and due dates.
- Review compliance and follow up against the standards and objectives. Resolve work obstacles and issues positively and quickly.
- Coordinate Land related matters of Sasol Mining with Regional Site Services and Assets team and manage Service Level Agreement.
- Coordinate SLP inputs with respective Sasol business units.
- Coordinate external service providers such as environmental practitioners responsible for public participation and preparation of specialist studies, attorneys regarding notarial execution of rights, registrations, appeals, objections etc.

- Liaise directly with internal clients to understand their specific requirements and expectations.
- Secure effective project and application approval related to mine project planning, daily feedback, quality control, and appropriate feedback mechanisms or channels.
Formal Education
- B.Tech or Honours degree in Legal, Mineral Law Administration, Commercial, Marketing, Social Sciences and/or Administration).
- A post graduate qualification in Prospecting and Mining Law and having been admitted as an attorney or advocate will be an added advantage.

- Experience: 10+ relevant years
