- The Grain Trader will be responsible for managing the procurement, sales, and trading of grains (maize, wheat, barley, and soybeans) within domestic and international markets. A key aspect of this role will involve trading on the South African Futures Exchange (SAFEX) to hedge against price risks and optimize profitability. The role requires market analysis, relationship building with key stakeholders, and ensuring profitable trading activities while adhering to compliance regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
Trading & Market Analysis:
- Negotiate and execute purchase and sales agreements for grains.
- Trade actively on SAFEX, including futures and options contracts, to mitigate price risk.
- Monitor and analyze market trends, SAFEX data, commodity prices, and supply-demand dynamics to identify profitable opportunities.
- Develop and maintain a trading book with detailed records of transactions, pricing, and SAFEX positions.
Procurement & Sales:
- Establish and maintain relationships with farmers, cooperatives, and suppliers to source grains.
- Build a network of customers, including millers, processors, and exporters.
- Negotiate pricing and delivery terms to secure competitive deals.
- Ensure smooth logistics and timely delivery of products.
Risk Management:
- Use SAFEX trading strategies (e.g., hedging and speculating) to manage price volatility effectively.
- Monitor risk exposure and ensure trading decisions align with company policies and market conditions.
- Mitigate risks associated with credit, logistics, and market changes through proactive strategies.
Regulatory Compliance & Documentation:
- Ensure compliance with South African agricultural trading laws, SAFEX regulations, and international trade standards.
- Maintain accurate records of SAFEX trades, contracts, invoices, and delivery receipts.
- Handle all documentation related to import/export and transportation processes.
Collaboration & Reporting:
- Work closely with logistics, finance, and operations teams to ensure seamless execution of trades.
- Prepare regular reports on SAFEX positions, market conditions, trading activities, and profit margins for management review.
Required Skills:
- SAFEX Expertise: Strong understanding of SAFEX trading rules, instruments, and strategies.
- Analytical Skills: Ability to interpret market data, SAFEX price movements, and economic trends.
- Negotiation: Excellent negotiation skills to secure favorable terms.

- Proficient in trading platforms and financial instruments, specifically those related to SAFEX.
- Familiarity with logistics, supply chain management, and agricultural policies in South Africa.
