Job Description

The Associate Environmental Scientist will assist and provide support to Environmental & Social Studies for various AECOM projects across the AECOM global team, as well as supporting the African engineering teams. In addition, you will function as liaison and advisor on environmental, social, and related issues for projects in the following sectors:

  • Linear infrastructure.
  • Mining.
  • Energy.
  • Bulk Services.
  • Data Centres.

The candidate will furthermore have experience in team management and a passion for mentoring.

Job Duties

  • Supports the Associate Director/ Technical Director/Practice Lead in implementing the overall discipline strategic goals.
  • Support the global business in the compilation and review of environmental permitting and planning applications.
  • Assist in the compilation of Environmental and Social Impact Assessments in compliance with international standards and guidelines (e.g., IFC Performance Standards / World Bank Guidelines / Lender requirements).
  • Provides specialised input to studies and assessments within their specific area of expertise.
  • Develops study and assessment procedures to facilitate high-quality, cost-effective work by others.
  • Actively participates in and influence engineering design on large infrastructure development projects.
  • Provide technical environmental expertise for screening and feasibility studies.
  • Provision of environmental advisory services to clients and design teams.
  • Assist in preparation and evaluation of analytical data.
  • Conduct field investigations to quantify, analyse, evaluate, and verify environmental data and aspects.
  • Project manage medium to large sized projects including budget control, task development, and client and stakeholder liaison.
  • Work effectively within the global AECOM team.
  • Working effectively within a remote/virtual environment.
  • Coaching and mentoring of junior team members.
  • Effectively illustrate the ability to balance and meet multiple deadlines.

Experience

  • Minimum of between 15 – 20 years’ experience within the environmental consulting or environmental management field.
  • Excellent knowledge of Environmental Permitting practices and approaches.
  • Excellent knowledge of Environmental International Standards and Guidelines.
  • Proven experience in Stakeholder Engagement and managing Public Participation processes.
  • Proven experience in conducting Environmental Projects in compliance with International Standards and Guidelines (e.g., IFC Performance Standards / World Bank Guidelines / Lender requirements) will be an advantage.
  • Proven experience in providing environmental advisory services will be an advantage.

Qualifications

  • At least a BSc /BA (Hons) Degree in Environmental Management or suitable equivalent.
  • Registration with or in progress with SACNASP and EAPASA or equivalent is required.
  • Affiliation with IAIAsa and IAP2 will be an advantage.
  • Third party sustainability certification accreditation will be advantageous.
  • Specific Skills Required (Hiring manager completion required, mandatory)
  • Must be proficient in MS Office application software.
  • The ability to manage client relationships within the AECOM global team and externally.
  • The ability to manage project budget and programmes.
  • Responsive and proactive to changing project scope within large complex development projects.
  • The ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Affective communicator within a culturally diverse team.
  • Comfortable with working in teams in different time zones.
  • Coaching and mentoring.
