Job Description:
As our Certified Engineeryour responsibilities will include but not limited to:
- Safety, Health and Environment
- Select and allocate resources for safe work.
- Consider environmental factors and minimise adverse impacts.
- Oversee safety management system elements and comply as appropriate.
- Ensure critical controls are functioning.
- Implement and maintain safety standards.
- Promptly investigate all incidents.
- Active participation in VFLs, Risk Assessments and close-out of Safety Actions.
Authority:

- Issue safety-related instructions to any employees or contractors at the workplace.
- Initiate action, including training, against subordinates and contractors for their role in unsafe behaviour.
Technical Directive:
- Align civil engineering strategy with production profile.
- Improve engineering discipline by providing quality work and feedback to the civil management system.
- Proactively manage civil engineering risks.
- Ensure quality control/assurance in routine testing and contractor management.
Authority:
- Review progress against the plan and make changes and adjustments accordingly.
- Assign tasks to contractors in line with achieving the agreed production plan.
- Monitor and optimise contractors’ work schedules.
- Stop or redirect work that is not being executed according to quality standards or is not being solved if needed.
- Optimize the usage of assets to meet the requirements set by the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) – service authority:
- Analyse the operational procedures to identify potential areas of improvement.
- Implement changes that can help optimise the usage of assets.
- Ensure that the service authority complies with the MHSA regulations.
- Maximize the value of the assets.
- Ensure safety, health, and environmental compliance by providing suitable, available, and reliable equipment – advisory/management authority:
- Monitor equipment performance and conduct regular inspections.
- Promptly carry out any necessary repairs or maintenance.
- Prioritize equipment safety and reliability to reduce risks and create a safer work environment.
- Conduct audits to monitor adherence to regulations and procedures such as MHSA, OHSA, and COP – auditing/service authority:
- Review policies and procedures to find areas for improvement and address compliance gaps.
- Create detailed audit reports and share them with relevant stakeholders for transparency and accountability.
- Collaborate with management to prioritise corrective actions and develop action plans for identified deficiencies.
- Train employees on regulations and procedures to promote a safety and compliance culture.
- Continuously monitor corrective actions and adjust the audit program for improved compliance.
- Manage contractors involved in project work such as operation, construction, fabrication, rebuilding, and disassembling – management/service authority:
- Identify contractors for project work (operation, construction, fabrication, rebuilding, and disassembling).
- Evaluate contractors’ qualifications to meet the requirements.
- Negotiate contract terms with selected contractors.
- Develop project plans and schedules for contractors’ activities.
- Coordinate with contractors for project requirements and deliverables.
- Monitor contractors’ progress, schedule, and quality standards.
- Address any issues or concerns during the project with contractors.
- Review contractors’ work for project scope, specifications, and requirements.
- Approve work and authorise payment for contractors’ services.
- Close out contracts with contractors upon project completion.
- Enhance maintenance plans, practices, and methodologies – advisory authority:
- Identify areas for improving maintenance plans, practices, and methodologies.
- Analyse current practices and methodologies to assess their effectiveness and efficiency.
- Develop a strategy to enhance maintenance plans and practices based on the analysis.
- Provide advisory authority to stakeholders for implementing new maintenance plans and practices.
- Regularly evaluate the effectiveness of enhanced maintenance plans and practices.
- Continuously monitor and identify areas for improvement to ensure optimal efficiency and effectiveness.
- Ensure project equipment maintenance is executed within budget constraints – management/service authority:
- Identify and mitigate potential risks and issues related to equipment maintenance.
- Collaborate with management and service authorities to align maintenance activities with project objectives.
- Regularly review maintenance schedules and plans for effectiveness.
- Communicate maintenance-related concerns to relevant stakeholders promptly.
- Conduct regular meetings with the maintenance team to discuss progress and improvement opportunities.
- Analyse maintenance data to identify trends and areas for improvement.
- Develop and implement maintenance policies and procedures based on best practices.
- Ensure all maintenance activities comply with regulations and guidelines.
- Budget and Cost Control Management
- Ensure compliance with the budget for the area of responsibility.
- Evaluate and approve cost impacts in the area of responsibility and revise the budget accordingly.
- Identify, communicate, and execute potential cost-reduction initiatives.
Authority:
- Generate authorisation for expenditures.
- Revise the budget after receiving appropriate authorisations.
- Take necessary action to correct misallocations.
Qualifications:
- Engineering B-degree and GCC or National Diploma and GCC
- SA Drivers Licence
Technical Knowledge
- 6-8 years of relevant operational experience in the Mining Industry (2.13.3.1 legal appointment of not less than 3 years).
- Project management experience is advantageous.
- Contractor management experience is a must.
- Knowledge of the legal compliance framework is a must.
- Technical knowledge and being conversant with engineering standards and codes are desirable.
- Understanding of value drivers in engineering and their interdependence
- Advanced computer literacy (MS Office, Projects, Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
- Knowledge of HME Equipment maintenance, the mining industry, and relevant legislation (Mine Health and Safety Act).
- Experienced in identifying and implementing business and strategic improvement opportunities and projects in mines.
- Good knowledge of change management methodologies.
