Minimum Requirements
- Post-graduate Diploma in Psychology (equivalent to Honours level) or Bachelor of Psychology qualification or Bachelor of Social Work
- Registration with the HPSCA as a Counsellor or Social Worker
- Strong qualitative analytic skills.
- Experience with multi-phase projects
- Fluency in English and isiZulu
- Ability to use Microsoft Word
- Good interpersonal, organisational and problem solving skills
- Ability to work accurately, independently and in a team
- Ability to work to strict deadlines and attention to detail
Preference will be given to candidates who have:
- Preference will be given to candidates with a Masters Degree in Clinical, Counselling Research Psychology or Social Work or demonstrable progress towards completion of their Masters
- Previous experience with in-depth interviews or facilitating focus groups
- Previous experience with counselling or psychological support case management
- Previous research experience with children or other vulnerable groups
- Experience with qualitative data coding using Atlas TI or NVivo
- Demonstrable experience in transcription and translation from Zulu to English
- A valid and unendorsed driver’s license
- Experience of working in rural communities
- Willingness to work after hours and over weekends
Duties & Responsibilities
Key responsibilities:
- Working with the qualitative manager to ensure that data collection activities are conducted smoothly, ethically, and completed to deadlines
- Recruiting adult research participants and key stakeholder informants (for example community health workers or clinic staff)
- Scheduling and undertaking key informant and stakeholder in-depth interviews
- Collecting interview notes and facilitating audio recording of the interview.
- Recruiting participants and conducting focus group discussions with adults, adolescents and children
- Participating actively in team review meetings and feedback discussions
- Debriefing internal staff and/or participants in the event of psychological distress arising from the data collection process
- Initiating referrals to mental health/psychological support services for participants as and when the need arises
- Initiating referrals to the Employee Wellness Programme for staff needing ongoing mental health/psychological support
- Monitoring referred cases and providing the necessary support for both staff and participants to access continuing mental health/psychological support
- Keeping an up-to-date log or report of all referred cases
- Completing some transcription and translation of interviews from Zulu into English
- Ensuring qualitative data is correctly stored and uploaded using data technology provided
- Assisting with data collection activities, following up on research participants and contact visits
- Maintaining documentation and records of all field activities, and prepare field reports
- Adhering to ethical conduct requirements at all times in the field and office
- Carrying out any other activities deemed necessary for the success of the project
