Requirements and Expectations
Requirements:
- A National Diploma in Civil Engineering.
- Six (6) years post-qualification technical engineering experience.
- Compulsory registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as an engineering technician.
- A valid and unexpired driver’s licence.
- Knowledge of technical design and analysis of hydrological and/or water resource infrastructure.
- Knowledge of hydrological data management.
- Understanding of research and development principles.
- Knowledge and experience in computer-aided engineering applications.
- Knowledge of legal compliance and project management.
- Strong technical report writing and communication skills (both verbal and written).
- Excellent conflict management, negotiation, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team, with creativity, customer focus, responsiveness, and sound people and financial management skills.
- Must be prepared to work away from the office and travel extensively for extended periods of time.
Duties
- Manage technical services and support in conjunction with engineers, technologists, and associates in field, workshop, and technical hydrological activities.
- Ensure the promotion of safety in line with statutory and regulatory requirements.
- Evaluate existing technical manuals, standard drawings, and procedures to incorporate new technologies.
- Ensure quality control and integrity of hydrological time-series data.
- Manage the registration and maintenance of hydrological data on Hydstra.
- Oversee the maintenance and operation of surface water gauging sites, including control surveys, streamflow gauging, and calibration.
- Monitor real-time data of gauging sites and perform site evaluations and instrumentation monitoring.
- Manage administrative, human resource, and related technical functions.
- Provide inputs into the budgeting process, operational plans, and procurement plans.
- Compile and submit technical and administrative reports as required.
- Attend to risk and disaster management matters related to hydrological infrastructure.
- Engage in research and development through continuous professional development to stay updated on new technologies and procedures.
- Provide mentorship, training, and supervision of technical personnel.
- Conduct research and literature studies to enhance technical engineering expertise.
- Liaise with relevant professional bodies and councils on engineering-related matters.
