Performance Responsibilities:
Safe and Effective Operation of the School Bus
- Ensure all seat belts are in working order before leaving the campus.
- Ensure the bus is equipped with bus tools, first aid kit and fire extinguisher before leaving the campus.
- Complete security log when exiting school premises and upon entering school premises.
- Pick-up students and transport from home to school in the morning and from school to home in the afternoon.
- Drive Pre-K students home at agreed times.
- Drop students only at authorized stops.
- Determine level of safety before allowing a child to leave the bus and ensure there is an adult at home toaccept the child.
- Keep elementary children on the bus and return them to school if there is no adult at home to receive them.
- Obey all traffic laws.
- Call the Transport Office if driver is running late or if there are any route deviations.
- Drive the bus for field trips.
- Ensure the bus remains locked at all times during outings and only escorted individuals are allowed to board until the entire group is ready to return.
- Maintain the school-issued cell phone ensuring it is charged and has airtime whilst on and off campus. Only school-related telephone calls are permitted with a maximum charge of R400 per month
- Report minor and major accidents and complete required reports.
- Inform families of route changes or delays.
Maintain Order on the Bus
- Ensure that all students put their seatbelts on prior to the bus moving.
- Report unruly student behaviour to the supervisor or principal.
- Stop the bus at the side if the road if a student leaves their seat and refuses to return to it or ignores the driver’s instructions.
- Maintain discipline when students are on the bus.
- Transport only authorized students.
- Establish if there are any new children on the bus and where they live.
- Assist students in accordance with the code of conduct
General Facilities Maintenance
- Keep assigned bus clean and ensure that it gets washed twice each week.
- Check bus before each operation for any mechanical defects.
- Notify the supervisor in case of mechanical failure or lateness.
- Complete diesel and oil log when filling the bus with petrol.
- Maintain and care for the school buildings and surrounding areas.
- Perform cleaning work in designated areas of responsibility.
- Maintain a high level of safety, cleanliness and efficiency.
- Daily maintenance of bathrooms/classrooms/corridors and grounds
- Notify management of occurring deficiencies or needs for repairs
- Maintaining and upkeep of all cleaning equipment, supplies, and products
- Disposal of trash from bins transporting waste material to designated collection points
- Assist with any other duties as prescribed by the Supervisor / Manager
- Attend to ongoing maintenance of buildings and grounds as logged through the ticket
- Cleaning of vehicles as well as checking for damages
