REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Senior Certificate or equivalent plus an Honours Degree in Psychology/Counselling/Social Work or a related field. A Masters Degree will be an added advantage. Registration with a relevant professional body like the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) or South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP/Council). 
  • A minimum of 3 to 5 years’ experience in student counselling, academic advising, or a similar role, preferably within the TVET or higher education sector. A valid driver’s license with at least three years’ experience. Attributes and Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills; Empathy and the ability to work with a diverse student population; Excellent problem-solving and conflict resolution abilities; Knowledge of the TVET curriculum and understanding of student challenges. 
  • Must be prepared to take and implement instructions delegated by supervisors/managers. Proven computer literacy, including advanced MS Word, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint. Proven ability to effectively manage change. The incumbent must be willing to travel, work irregular hours and be committed to meeting deadlines within tight timeframes.

DUTIES: 

  • The duties of an Education Counsellor will primarily include Consult with students: Meet with students individually or in groups to discuss their academic progress. Address specific career goals and personal issues that potentially influence each student’s academic performance. Guide academic and career goals: Assist students in setting academic and career goals and creating a plan to achieve them. 
  • Provide information and offer advice about different career paths, on-course activities and options for continuing education/exit support. Administer and interpret assessments: Providing recruitment, psychometric assessment, and selection services. 
  • Administer and interpret various assessments such as aptitude and personality tests, and interest inventories for students to gain insight into their strengths and weaknesses and make informed decisions about their future. Develop and implement academic and personal support programs: Support students academically and personally, including tutoring, mentoring and counselling on a personal level and provide early intervention. 
  • Provide resources and referrals: Provide students with resources and referrals to external organisations or certified professionals to help them address personal issues that affect their academic success including mental health or financial concerns. 
  • Collaborate with faculty and student support staff: Mentoring and guiding lecturers and support staff/work with lecturers, student support officials, parents and other relevant stakeholders to create a supportive learning environment, Work closely with faculty and student support staff to identify and address student needs. 
  • Collectively, create an environment that provides support for students struggling academically or personally. Maintain detailed records and documentation: Maintain accurate and confidential records of interactions with students for future reference. Keep up to date with educational trends and research: Implementing behaviour management policies and procedures, Attempt to stay current regarding trends and research in education and counselling to ensure effective and relevant services to students.
