Job Description    

  • To provide overall leadership to Engineering teams on the Boksburg Site. The responsibility of the role includes Site Services provision, Operational Engineering Maintenance, Engineering Planning, Capital Expenditure, Risk and SHE compliance for the site

Minimum Requirements    

  • BEng or BSC degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, with 8 years trade experience of which at least 5 years un a supervisory category
  • Excellent understanding of mechanical and electrical engineering, experience in Boiler and Refrigeration plants advantageous
  • Qualified GCC factories
  • Effective communication in a clear and concise manner (both written and verbal)
  • Work extended hours as required.
  • Excellent leadership skills
  • Thorough understanding of the Labour Relations Act
  • Constantly looking and finding ways to improve plant efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Understand the full implications of potential problems and minimise their impact.
  • Recommend solutions bases on rigorous and research.
  • Practical experience in problem solving (e.g. WCM, TPM, 6 Sigma)

Duties & Responsibilities

Management of Safety Health Environment and Risk Management:

  • Guides the engineering team to ensure that all legislative standards are achieved, and timeous action is taken to ensure that there are no of non-compliance.
  • Ensure SHE compliance is continuously maintained and adhered to.
  • Leads, measures, and manages sustainability practices on site.
  • Suggest amendments to policies and practices within operational are of responsibility with the Processing Engineering Manager to ensure that these are kept up to date and are aligned with the company objectives and standards.
  • In terms of design use and maintenance, ensure completion and compliance of all facilities with the appointed legal requirements.

Safety and Security:

  • Ensures engineering staff follow safety rule and regulations.
  • Ensure that security access points to the premises system is in good working condition.
  • Reporting theft and dangers on the premises.
  • Ensures safety equipment’s is in good working order e.g. fire extinguishers.
  • Ensure that security is maintained and escalates any security concerns to the processing engineering and security manager.

Site Services:

  • Management of all site services across site and to all relevant parties
  • Management of services including (Security, Weighbridges, Utilities incl Steam, Refrigeration etc..)
  • Coordinates and inspects major contract work on the electrical, refrigeration, mechanical and plumbing, and other related systems.
  • Ensures that the building has adequate heating, lighting, and ventilation and that it is properly cleaned, maintained and in good working condition.

Maintenance: 

  • Ensure continuous improvement of the effective planned preventative maintenance system as well as oversee major repairs of the breakdowns thus minimising R&M costs.
  • Ensure all buildings and facilities comply to ISO22000 and FSSC 22000 requirements. Ensure all electrical equipment and installations are maintained or installed in accordance with statutory requirements and business needs.
  • Oversee repairs and maintenance on all other site utilities.
  • Manage maintenance team and ensure that planned maintenance programmes are implemented to enable optimal asset utilisation.
  • Ensure that maintenance practices are aligned to best in industry standards.
  • Ensures work is completed with minimised overtime.

Project Planning: 

Deliver effectively through the Process Engineering Team:

  • Capex strategy to reduce plant down time and improve efficiencies of machines and lines.
  • Process changes control documentation with regards to all equipment and plant changes with proven records for audit purposes.
  • Manage and control of fixed asset to maximise reliability.
  • Ensure that all project work in plant is carried out to food safety requirements.
  • Manage outside contractors to ensure the integrity of the engineering team
  • Department Management – Loss control, asset management, spares utilization and stock holding, all administrative duties.
  • Preparation of all capitalized major maintenance and capital request motivations and supporting documentation.
  • Manage appropriate life cycle stages of asset and purpose relevant replacements and updates.
  • Safety control of contractors

Operational Engineering Management:

Deliver through the plant superintendent and Artisan teams:

  • Drive the daily/weekly maintenance planning process for the plant- support the Operations Executive in the strategic direction of setting goals in plant reliability.
  • Drive and delivery the agreed strategy to reduce plant down time and improve efficiencies of machines and lines.

Financial Management:

  • Manage costs to ensure lowest cost production and the optimal utilisation of assets.
  • Report to Site Lead a weekly basis on actual KPI’s versus budget and work with team to address and areas of non- conformance or concern proactively and timeously.
  • Report on and manage all input costs and manage any over or underspend appropriately to ensure that issues are escalated before significant financial loss occurs.
  • Authorises plant engineering expenses within level of authority and monitor spending activity within teams.
  • Provide input into CAPEX documentation.

Engineering Stores:

  • Provide oversight and leadership of the Engineering Stores Supervisor.
  • Drive inventory management strategies through team to reduce inventory and minimise downtime.
  • Drive inventory management and stock controls.
