Minimum Requirements
- Diploma or B/Tech in Health & Safety, Environmental or Risk Control qualification. NOSA would be advantageous
- 3 – 4 Years experience of working in a manufacturing / office environment and a proven track record in Health, Safety & Environment.
- Minimum 4 years hands on experience working as the Safety Officer in a manufacturing environment.
- 1-2 years leadership experience and ISO 9000/1400 series knowledge would be an added advantage.
- 3 – 5 years FMCG/Manufacturing experience
Duties and Responsibilities
Safety & Legal Compliance
- Ensure that the plant adheres to all applicable clauses of OHSA, local by-laws and company safety regulations, policies, and standards
- Maintain a register of all SHE Legal Statues and any changes in the new legislation is filed, tracked and changes adhered to and actioned upon
- Ensure the creation, maintenance, review and updating of SHE Policies, standards, and procedures, and that SHE is integrated into all activities
- Establish and participate in the SHE Committee in accordance with the OHS Act
- Ensure that SHE incident investigations are conducted
- Assist HOD’s with the establishment of the SHE related investment and operational budgets
- Contribute to the implementation of a safety concept in construction and/or installation projects and ensure that all contractors who perform work on the site comply with all company SHE requirements
- Ensure that there is good communication and regular interaction with all the departments on all OHS issues
- Ensure that an adequate program exists to monitor and report on the quality of water and air (incl. effluent discharge)
- Assume responsibility for site security, access control and CCTV management
- Researching and implementing new materials handling processes
- Evaluating, assessing, and altering safety policies and procedures
- Maintains fire detection and fire suppression systems
Inspections, Risk Assessments & Reports
- Conduct risk assessments of all plant machinery, processes, and ancillary equipment
- Maintain records of accident statistics in accordance with legal procedures for management and central safety committee and provide stats
- Compile and submit accurate Key Reports using KPI/BIC reports as per applicable schedule and Factory Manager of any serious safety concerns
- Comply with Nando’s Feitoria reporting and prepare the relevant documentation for submission to the relevant authorities as per OHSA
- Conduct a comprehensive 6 monthly SHE inspection of the entire premises and submit a written report of the same
- Collect and report on the monthly and annual SHE statistics and KPI’s
- Track incident metrics and apply findings
- Lead injury and incident inquiries and evaluations
- Analyze accident reports and evaluate injury case studies
Training, External Relations, Safety Action Roadmaps
- Conduct, or facilitate safety training (OHSA and legislation, Operator, first aid, hazardous chemicals, electrical training etc.) and education to company personnel to embed the culture of safety in our team
- Ensure that agreed Safety Action Plans and deadlines as per external and internal Management Safety Audits are adhered to
- Ensure that all the required internal and external safety audits are carried out as per the agreed schedules
- Ensure adherence to all SHE related legislation, provide advice, guidance, and support to the Plant
- Ensure that arrangements are in place to make all staff aware of legal obligations relating to SHE Risks
- Supervise and help to organize, equip, and train the different specialized groups dealing with SHE, such as Fire team, First aid team, Hazardous material group and Evacuation team
- Identify the SHE training needs for the site, develop a SHE Training Matrix and ensure that the trainings are completed
- Organize continuous SHE education and training programs for all employees
Food Security & Defense
- Coordinate the cross-functional food defense team
- Risk assessment and vulnerability studies annually or as required
- Establish a food defense plan
- Food defense training for all employees
Environmental
- Responsible for First Garment coordination.
- Establish and head up company Sustainability Committee to monitor & report on power & water usage as well as waste management & recycling
- Implement and manage the site environmental monitoring program
- Oversee contractors and consultants providing environmental services
- Support the development of site compliance reports required in association with legislation
- Implement and verification of the business environmental management system
- Partner with operational teams to support an effective environmental risk management
