Key roles and responsibilities:

Facilities maintenance:

  • Undertake basic maintenance of heating, lighting, refrigeration, air conditioning units, chillers, walk in coolers/freezers, plumbing and security systems to ensure they operate safely and efficiently. This includes electrical faults and leak detection.
  • Implement preventative maintenance schedules to ensure that equipment is serviced regularly, avoiding costly breakdowns and downtime.
  • Respond to urgent repair needs and equipment failures across various systems within the building.
  • Supervise and work alongside general maintenance staff members responsible for building, plumbing, HVAC, general repairs and electrical maintenance.
  • Where applicable provide training to staff on new equipment, maintenance techniques, and safety protocols.
  • Develop and manage maintenance budgets, ensuring that the costs of repairs and replacements are kept within approved limits.
  • Track inventory of spare parts, tools, and supplies, and maintain cost- effective purchasing practices
  • Manage relationships with external contractors for specialized services that may be required, such as electrical COC’s, major refrigeration system overhauls or HVAC system replacements.
  • Review and approve vendor invoices, ensuring services rendered align with agreed contracts and service level agreements.
  • Lead and coordinate major repair, replacement, or upgrade projects related to building systems.
  • Ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget, and with minimal disruption to building occupants.

Safety and compliance:

  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations regarding refrigerants (such as HFCs, CFCs) and environmental concerns.
  • Ensure that all work follows local safety codes, building regulations, and environmental laws.
  • Conduct regular safety audits and ensure that technicians are trained in safe working practices, especially when working with hazardous refrigerants or electrical systems.
  • Maintain all necessary records, including maintenance logs, inspection reports, and compliance documentation

Education and training:

  • Matric
  • Relevant certifications (plumbing, electrical, etc) an added advantage.

Experience:

  • At least 3 years’ experience in facilities maintenance/  Handyman/ similar – for a big site/ office/ complex etc.
  • Experience with hardware tools and electrical equipment.
  • Required to travel up to 30% of the month to other sites within South Africa
