About the job

  • The role demands excellent written English and grammar, besides meticulous attention to detail. Candidates will be able to proof to a strict style and within deadlines; a good level of numeracy and comfort working with data and visual graphics; some interest in global economics, politics and business.
  • Freelance sub-editors will proof entire reports. Each report covers a single country, and contains both qualitative and quantitative analysis, including BMI’s proprietary data and forecasts. Work is assigned on a weekly basis. Candidates have the flexibility to calibrate their commitments, also on a weekly basis.

The Freelance Sub-Editor will need to:

  • Proofread economic, political and industry-specific content across various industries/countries.
  • Work within our content management system.
  • Check for consistency, adherence to house style, accuracy of figures, libel & copyright infringement, grammar and punctuation.
  • Ensure quality standards, as set out in our editorial guidelines.

Basic Requirements:

  • Based, and have the right to work in South Africa.
  • A degree of 2:1 or higher, ideally in a languages-related field.
  • Fluent English speaker, with excellent written English.
  • Previous experience (academic or professional) in editorial work, copyediting or proofreading – preferably with industry/economic content.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Good level of numeracy and comfort working with data and visual graphics.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel. Experience with a Content Management System (CMS) is desirable.
