Job Description

  • This role creates value within the supply chain by leading and managing the complete shipping function for imports and exports. The successful candidate will actively engage with all trading divisions and industry-relevant supply chain partners to ensure Strategic direction and the effective operation of processes and achieve cost efficiency, productivity, and timeline objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Strategically lead the Shipping Function in the Group
  • Lead and direct the shipping team to achieve key performance indicators.
  • Lead our team’s growth with feedback, development, coaching, and disciplinary procedures.
  • Drive accountability and develop leadership roles to enhance culture and succession planning.  Identify and solve supply chain problems, considering alternative solutions. 
  • Collaborate with internal and external teams to build supply chain strategies, address supply chain issues, and implement corrective actions.
  • Plan and implement import logistics based on supplier and Divisional Sales demand.
  • Ensure procedures support effective shipping operations.
  • Partner with suppliers and inventory planners for accurate international goods movement.
  • Analyse trends to highlight emerging issues for business consideration.
  • Gather information and reach a consensus on necessary changes due to shifts in the shipping landscape.
  • Ensure the timely arrival of goods and obtain the best freight rates.
  • Design, evaluate, and renew contracts; monitor and report on import activities.
  • Analyse historical data to determine future financial budgets.
  • Manage the division’s budget and identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Facilitate rate negotiations and manage third-party logistics contracts.
  • Engage with SARS for compliance and trade facilitation.
  • Engage with SARS & DTI to influence national trade policy.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, regulatory changes, and emerging risks.
  • Identify and mitigate supply chain risks, focusing on product safety and brand reputation.
  • Recommend optimal transportation modes, routing, equipment, and frequency.
  • Provide recommendations for divisional alignment to ensure efficient business processes.
  • Oversee and implement division strategy, aligning actions with key projects and business success.
  • In-depth knowledge of customs regulations and AEO requirements. Manage and maintain AEO certification.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Supply Chain Management/ or Supply Chain related advanced qualification.
  • 7-10 years of experience in a Shipping/ Supply Chain environment with 2+ years leading a large shipping or supply chain function or department 
  • AEO certification or equivalent is required – Sufficient Customs Knowledge Assessment qualification.
  • Specific knowledge of Supply chain and logistics processes, Value Chain Management, Analytical/business acumen, Customs Laws, import/export processes and solution building.
  • Understanding of International Trade, Retail Supply Chains, Logistic Service Providers environment locally & internationally      
  • Strategic mindset with a focus on long-term growth and sustainability
