Purpose of the position:

  • The Health and Wellness Counsellor will be responsible for the Risk Assessment (CORE), HIV testing and referral as well as health education and condom distribution in the My Journey Programme.

Minimum Requirements    

  • Grade 12) or equivalent to NQF 4
  • Minimum of 1-2 years HIV counselling and testing experience
  • HIV/AIDS Counselling Certificate – such as the 10-day Counselling Course
  • Finger-prick certificate not older than 2 years coupled with Rapid Test Continuous Quality Improvement (RTCQI) training would be a great advantage
  • Basic Knowledge HIV/TB/STI/SRH exposure or training and preventative approaches
  • Understanding of South African guidelines of HIV Testing Services and related quality assurance processes
  • Knowledge of Adolescent Girls and Young Women and Key Populations programming preferable
  • Ability to work non-traditional/flexible hours.
  • Ability to travel as and when required
  • MS Office proficiency
  • Criminal clear

Duties and Responsibilities    

  • Conduct the Risk Assessment (RA) to determine the HTS, SRH, TB, STI, ART and PrEP services needed
  • Provide SRH education
  • Referral (internal or external) and/or linkages to other services as required
  • Provide an integrated, holistic client-centred HTS with support and guidance from the Professional Nurse
  • Ability to obtain an informed, written consent for HIV counselling and testing, TB and STI’s screening
  • Perform HTS according to National Algorithm, finger prick for HIV rapid diagnostic testing and perform HIVSS according to National Protocol
  • Conduct workplace and community combination HIV prevention initiatives including STI’s, TB, HIV, risk reduction counselling, screening and appropriate referrals
  • Comply to HTS, waste management and infection control guidelines and policies
  • Adhering to Health and Safety and Infection Control Policies and Procedures
  • Performing quality assurance activities for HIV Testing and Counselling, including RTCQI and participating in Proficiency Testing under the supervision of the NiMART Professional Nurse
  • Refer all Human Rights cases to the internal paralegal/social worker
  • Identify and refer all GBV, and other human rights violations to the PN or social worker
  • Data collection of electronic and/or paper-based documentation on HTS and other service referrals
  • Record keeping into NDOH HTS register and NDoH Consent forms
  • Support the NiMART PN with stock management and temperature control of test kits
  • Monitoring HTS data and ensuring targets are met
  • Attend meetings, briefings, debriefing, staff meetings and others as directed
