Laboratory Manager – Johannesburg needed at Nando’s

Educational Requirements 

• ND, B. Tech, B.Sc. Analytical Chemistry. 
• Detailed knowledge of ISO17025 requirements and implementation

Experience Required 

• At least 5 years’ experience in analytical laboratory. Detailed knowledge of operating an HPLC, Auto Titrator, pH meter, as well as including but not limited to supporting equipment – water filtration, centrifuge, reflux unit, ultrasonic bath. Detailed knowledge of ISO 17025 and implementation experience
• Knowledge of additional laboratory equipment and the theory and methodology associated with tests conducted on Nando’s products.
• Understanding of ISO/FSSC22000

Knowledge and Skills Required (Advanced)

• Detailed knowledge of operating HPLC using Empower, Auto titrator, moisture balance and other laboratory equipment and other laboratory equipment (Advanced)
• Method development, verification, and validation (Advanced)
• Report writing (e.g., PT reports) (Advanced)
• Knowledge of ISO17025 with the purpose of implementation (Advanced)
• Ability to raise NCR’s and conduct RCA’s (Intermediate)
• Auditing experience (Intermediate)

Duties and Responsibilities

These include, but are not limited to the following, and may include any other reasonable and lawful requests:

Manage

• Oversee all laboratory activities and testing procedures including the preparation of glassware, to ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results
• Ensure raw materials and finished products are accurately tested according to thecorrect methodology and report anomalies
• Oversee the processing of samples (grinding and prep) to ensure they are representative and homogenous
• Review and sign off test results and reports from both internal and external laboratories
• Review and sign off certificates of analysis/Certificates of Conformance
• Oversee that Route Cause Analysis are carried out adequately if/when required
• Oversee the submission of samples for analytical testing to external Laboratories
• Write and review SOPs for Laboratory instrument and devices
• Write and review working instructions for all laboratory testing methods
• Oversee Method development
• Oversee Method verification
• Oversee Method validations
• Operation of the HPLC using Empower software in the event the laboratory analyst is unavailable
• Operation of Auto titrator, pH meter, moisture analyser, colourimeter and all other laboratory equipment to ensure continuity of testing in the event the laboratory analyst is not available
• Ensure laboratory equipment and consumables, including chemicals are kept secure and appropriately stored to maintain the accuracy, integrity, and longevity of all items
• Ensure laboratory waste is handled and stored in a safe manner and is removed, and disposed of using appropriate methods using a reputable supplier
• Provide technical support and advice
• Development of further tests that can be brought in-house

Manage and support the Laboratory Analyst

• Review laboratory maintenance and calibration schedules to ensure lab instruments are serviced, properly maintained, and functioning correctly.
• Review that calibrations and maintenance activities are carried out in accordance with the calibration and maintenance schedule
• Ensure that all records are correctly saved and kept updated

Service provider compliance

• Ensure that third party laboratories responsible for testing Nando’s raw materials and products are evaluated for suitability, compliance, and accuracy by periodically visiting and auditing the facility and test method
• Ensure that service providers carrying out maintenance and calibration of the laboratory equipment complete the necessary paperwork and provide written records of the work completed. Work completed needs to meet the Nando’s frequency and requirements of the Maintenance and calibration schedule

Laboratory Management system

• Implementation and maintenance of ISO/SANS 17025
• Participation in audits
• On the job observations

Other

• Participate as a member of the Food Safety Team
• Attend monthly report reviews and provide updated and current data in relation to our food safety management and laboratory systems
• Attend Management reviews and FSSC 22000 audits and provide updated and current data related to these events
• Maintenance of any documentation related to our food safety system in relation to the laboratory
• Update and oversee the accuracy of the dash board
