Brief Description
- The Department of African Languages at the University of the Witwatersrand is seeking to make an appointment at the level of Lecturer (to start on 1 September 2024).
Requirements:
- Experience in teaching formal and/or computational linguistics;
- Ability to teach isiZulu and/or Sesotho second language (L2) acquisition courses;
- A PhD in any area of formal and/or computational linguistics;
- Evidence of research ability, with 1-2 peer-reviewed publications;
- Home language proficiency in at least one of the following and fluency in at least another two (isiZulu, isiXhosa, isiNdebele, Siswati, Sepedi, Sesotho, XiTsonga, and TshiVenda).
Responsibilities:
- The successful candidate will be required to:
- Lecture at undergraduate and postgraduate level;
- Supervise postgraduate student research in one or more indigenous languages of South Africa (preferably in isiZulu and/or Sesotho);
- Conduct research and publish in the field of African linguistics;
- Carry out administrative duties in the department/school and take part in the intellectual and public life of the university;
- Participate in curriculum transformation activities.
