About the Role

The Medical Technologist drives high-RPM diagnostic accuracy by managing laboratory data and ensuring 100% compliance with HPCSA and SANAS laboratory standards. Utilizing specialized LIS platforms and ServiceNow for workflow orchestration, the technologist mitigates operational risk in pathology services. Their role leverages data-driven diagnostics to optimize treatment precision and ensures the technical reliability of provincial laboratory results.

  • Registration with the HPCSA as Medical Technologist in Histopathology.
  • Valid Code B/EB driver’s license.
  • Above average ability to communicate clearly and discreetly in person and in writing. Above average Computer and software literacy in at least MS Excel and Word. Ability to achieve and maintain good interpersonal and working relations with staff and clients, with knowledge of the core values of the Department. Ability to perform duties outside normal working hours and away from base of employment.
  • Good administrative skills and Laboratory Staff Management, with above average technical skills and problem-solving ability under pressure.
  • Knowledge of the applicable Laboratory Information System. Knowledge of the medico-legal principles, including maintenance of chain of custody, that form the cornerstone of all medical laboratories but is of particular importance in a Forensic laboratory set-up. Proficiency in Good Laboratory Practice.
  • Knowledge and Application of policies – sections of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the National Health Act and the Inquests Act, as well as the processes and procedures
  • Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as Medical Technologist in Histopathology.
  • Effective Clinical Service delivery and transformation. Effective and efficient Clinical Governance and Quality Assurance. Effective Corporate Governance. Effective and efficient administrative and academic responsibilities.
  • Grade 1: None after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Technologist (Histopathology) in respect of South African employees. 1-year relevant experience after registration with the HPCSA in the relevant profession as a Medical Technologist (Histopathology) in respect of foreign qualified employees, of whom it is not required to work Community Service, as required in South Africa.
  • Grade 2: A minimum of 10 years relevant experience after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Technologist (Histopathology) in respect of South African employees.
  • 11-years relevant experience after registration with the HPCSA in the relevant profession as a Medical Technologist (Histopathology) in respect of foreign qualified employees, of whom it is not required to work Community Service, as required in South Africa
  • Grade 3: A minimum of 20 years relevant experience after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Technologist (Histopathology) respect of South African employees.
  • 21-years relevant experience after registration
  • Grade 1: R 397 233 – R 454 191 per annum, Grade 2: R 463 941 – R 529 221 per annum, Grade 3: R 543 099 – R 657 507 per annum Annual salary plus service benefits (13th cheque, employer’s contribution to the pension fund, housing and medical aid allowance).

A Bachelor of Health Sciences in Medical Laboratory Science (B.HSc MLS) and HPCSA registration are mandatory foundations.
