The IIE MSA Campus has a vacancy for a Part-time Engineering Lecturer in the following fields:
- Economic Decision Making for Sustainability: This module will provide students with a solid foundation in Economics to make managerial decisions.
- Embedded Systems: The purpose of this module is to provide students with the knowledge of the tools used in developing an embedded system in relation to different system platforms in order to develop embedded systems.
- Power Electronics: The purpose of this module is to expand on the fundamentals of the use of high-power electronic devices and circuits to develop knowledge of the effect that high-power electronic devices have on peripheral systems and the adverse effects of distorting the quality of electricity supply.
- Signal Processing: The purpose of this module is to provide students with the knowledge and skills in signal processing to apply these to various scenarios.
- Sociological Perspectives of Development: The module will provide a critical approach to development studies by focusing on sociological perspectives in order to analyse developmental processes critique the applicability of policies in developing countries, especially those in Africa.
- Statistical Methods: The purpose of this module is to develop the statistical techniques required to solve real-life engineering problems that are subjected to variation and uncertainty
- Telecommunication Systems: This module deals with the important aspects of modern telecommunication systems in order to solve problems in given scenarios.
- Geotechnical Engineering 2B: The purpose of this module is to expand on students’ foundational knowledge of geotechnical materials by considering the geology and mechanical properties of soils for geotechnical engineering design and applications.
- Rural and Urban Infrastructure 2B: The purpose of this module is to provide students with an introduction, background and context for rural and urban infrastructure development. It introduces them to settlement patterns and other key elements of development that forms the basis for infrastructure design and implementation.
- Society and Practice 2B: The purpose of this module is to enhance the students’ understanding of the legal aspects of engineering practice by reviewing codes of conduct and professional responsibility according to regulations. It further introduces technologies appropriate to developing economies.
- Structural Engineering 2B: The purpose of this module is to provide students with the knowledge of limit state design, material and load factors and how these are related to the design of structures and structural elements.
- Water Engineering 2B: The purpose of this module is to introduce students to the key elements of water engineering and to develop their appreciation of the water cycle, fluid mechanics, and open channel flow. This will be applied in subsequent water engineering design and applications.
Competencies Required:
- The primary purpose of this position is the development and delivery of effective teaching on qualifications and all associated academic activities such as student engagement and support that will promote student success and learning. This includes responsibility for modules from conceptualisation through to assessment and responsibility for an integrated, effective curriculum within qualifications. Participation in scholarship such as research is also required. Effective lecturers need to be active members of the institutional academic community, contributing to and participating in the development, effective governance, and reputation development of the institution.
- Lecture/practicum preparation, delivery and all related teaching and assessment activities across the required modes of delivery.
- Marking of assessments providing timeous and constructive feedback to students.
- Development of ICE activities, learning material such as manuals, assessment instruments and rubrics and memoranda as required.
- Participation in peer review of the marking and lecturing of other lecturers; and
- Participation in lecturing quality assurance and development associated with own teaching.
- May be required to internally moderate assessments scripts that fall within the respective subject fields, where necessary across IIE sites of delivery.
- Assist where required with the experiential learning of students in their programme.
- Conduct student support interventions where required.
- Appropriate academic administration as required.
- Involvement with Teaching and Learning activities, including onboarding, peer reviews, internal moderation and the production of a teaching portfolio.
- Consultation with students to provide academic support.
- Engagement in review and improvement and quality assurance activities of the IIE’s Faculty of Engineering, Science and Health.
- Adherence to institutional norms, standards, policies, and processes; and
- Development of academic material and assessments on programmes as required, including, but not limited to, the roles of developer, moderator or equivalent for the Central Academic Team (CAT).
Minimum Qualification Requirements:
- Minimum a BEng/BIng/BSc (Eng) and a Master’s degree in the relevant discipline. Professional registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) would be highly advantageous.
Minimum Work Experience Requirements:
- Ideally minimum of 2 years in teaching and experience gained from similar higher education role at a recognised tertiary institution or;
- Alternatively a minimum of 5 years in related industry experience.
