About the Role

Specializing in perioperative care, this nurse manages the highly technical environment of surgical theaters and day wards. Utilizing specialized medical software and ServiceNow for surgical workflow coordination, the nurse ensures 100% compliance with SANC and sterility protocols. Their expertise in managing surgical data and acute patient monitoring is critical for mitigating operational risk and ensuring successful patient outcomes during complex procedures.

  • Basic R425 qualification (i.e., diploma/degree in nursing) or equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse and midwife. A post-basic nursing qualification, with duration of at least 1 year, accredited with SANC in Medical and Surgical Nursing Science: Operating theatre technique, which allows registration with SANC.
  • Good communication, interpersonal relationships, exceptional leadership and conflict resolution skills. Ability to function/make decisions independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Practical knowledge and experience in the operating theatre. Basic computer skills in MS Word, Excel, Outlook. Knowledge of relevant legislation and policies of the Department of Health Western Cape.
  • Grade 1: A minimum of 4 years appropriate/recognisable experience in nursing after registration as a Professional Nurse with the SANC in General Nursing
  • Grade 2: A minimum of 14 years appropriate/recognisable experience in nursing after registration as Professional Nurse with the SANC in General Nursing.
  • At least 10 years of the period referred to above must be appropriate/recognisable experience in Operating Theatre after obtaining the 1-year post-basic qualification in the relevant specialty.
  • No payment of any kind is required when applying for this post. Short listed candidates will be subjected to a written and oral assessment. Candidates who are not in possession of the stipulated registration requirements may also apply.
  • Such candidates will only be considered for appointment on condition that proof of application for registration with the relevant council and proof of payment of the prescribed registration fees to the relevant council are submitted on or before the day of the interview.” This concession is only applicable on health professionals who apply for the first time for registration in a specific category with the relevant council (including individuals who must apply for change in registration status)”
  • The pool of applicants will be considered for vacancies within the Chief Directorate: Metro Health Services, for a period of 3 months from date of advert, provided that the job title, core functions, inherent requirements, and salary level are the same as those of the advertised post.
  • Provide safe and comprehensive care delivered to patients in theatre. Provision of optimal, holistic specialised care with set standards within professional/legal framework. Ensure adherence to the principles of IPC practices in the theatre. Ensure accurate record keeping for statistical and legal purposes. Support and supervise students and subordinates in theatre. Effective utilization of resources.
  • Registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse and midwife. Proof of annual registration with the SANC.
  • Willingness to work shifts, day and night duty, weekends, and public holidays to meet the operational requirements. Must be prepared to assist in all departments according to operational requirements.
  • Grade 1: R 476,367 per annum, Grade 2: R 583,989 per annum Annual salary plus service benefits (13th cheque, employer’s contribution to the pension fund, housing and medical aid allowance).

A Degree or Diploma in Nursing, supplemented by a Post-Basic specialty qualification in Medical and Surgical Nursing Science (Operating Theatre), is mandatory.
