Purpose of the Role
- To ensure compliance with mine health and safety legislation, implement effective safety management systems, and promote a culture of zero harm across all security operations.
Compliance & Standards
- Ensure compliance with ISO standards: ISO 18788:2015, ISO 14001:2015, ISO 9001:2015, ISO 45001:2018.
- Implement and maintain health and safety management systems in line with the Mine Health and Safety Act and company standards.
- Advise on compliance with Mine Health and Safety Act, PSIRA, POPIA, and other relevant regulations.
- Liaise with regulatory mining stakeholders to ensure legal compliance.
Risk & Safety Management
- Conduct hazard identification and risk assessments for operational areas.
- Assist with risk mitigation controls and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Monitor occupational health risks and coordinate emergency preparedness plans.
Procedures & Documentation
- Develop and review Safe Operating Procedures and SHE system procedures.
- Prepare and maintain Safety Files and compliance documentation.
- Support monthly reporting to Site Manager, MD & National Compliance Manager.
Audits & Inspections
- Perform internal SHE audits and inspections, applying COMSOC 1 & 2 principles.
- Conduct Planned Job Observations (PJOs/PTOs) and contractor safety management.
Incident & Data Management
- Lead or assist with incident investigations and root cause analysis (WHY technique).
- Collect, analyse, and report SHE data for decision-making.
Training & Awareness
- Develop and deliver safety training programs for employees and contractors.
- Conduct safety talks, awareness programs, and toolbox talks.
- Drive Safe Behavioural Observations Program and promote a strong safety culture.
Emergency Preparedness
- Participate in emergency drills and ensure readiness across sites.

- Strong understanding of legal legislation (MHSA, POPIA, PAPA).
- Ability to deliver high-quality, proactive service to internal/external stakeholders.
- Networking and credibility-building skills with management and staff.
- Initiative and ability to work independently without supervision.

- Ability to provide guidance and constructive feedback.
- Good communication and facilitation skills for training and awareness campaigns.
Preferred Experience:
- Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in mining operations or related safety roles.
- Proven ability to implement and monitor health and safety programs in line with legal and company standards.
- Familiarity with ISO 45001 and risk-based safety management principles.
- Strong incident investigation and reporting skills.
- Compliance Standards:
- Ensure adherence to Mine Health and Safety Act and relevant regulations.
- Maintain accurate safety records and participate in internal/external audits.
- Promote a culture of safety and continuous improvement across all operational areas.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualification:
- Grade 12 (Matric).
COMSOC 1 & 2 Certification (Chamber of Mines Safety Officer Certificates):
- COMSOC 1: Foundational knowledge of mine health and safety legislation, hazard identification, risk assessment, and accident investigation.
- COMSOC 2: Advanced competency in safety management systems, auditing, occupational health, emergency preparedness, and compliance.
- Relevant Diploma Mine Safety Management / Risk (non-negotiable).
- PSIRA Grade A certified
Advantageous:
- SAMTRAC / NEBOSH certification
Experience:
- Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in mining operations or related safety roles.
Specific Requirements
- Familiarity with ISO 45001 and risk-based safety management principles.
- Strong incident investigation and reporting skills.
- Excellent communication and training facilitation abilities.
Health & Safety Competency Requirements
- COMSOC 1 & 2 Certification (Chamber of Mines Safety Officer Certificates)
