Senior Professional Officer – Data Engineer needed at City of Cape Town

Requirements

• As part of the Future Planning & Resilience directorate and Policy & Strategy department, the Data Analytics Hub plays a crucial central role within the City of Cape Town.
• We are a collaborative team, working closely with colleagues across various departments on a wide range of initiatives.
• Our mission is to harness the power of data to provide clarity, reduce uncertainty, and guide the organisation towards effective actions that improve the lives of Cape Town residents As the SPO: Data Engineer, you will design, develop and implement data infrastructures, pipelines, platforms and products to enable data and AI functions for the organisation and ultimately provide benefit to all residents of Cape Town.
• A relevant tertiary qualification (honours or four-year degree), preferably in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Information Technology or Information Systems.
• At least 5 years’ relevant experience

Our ideal candidate has:

• Proven experience building and managing large-scale data Systems.
• Expert-level proficiency in Python and SQL
• Deep, hands-on experience with the open-source data ecosystem
• Strong knowledge of cloud platforms and containerization
• A desire for data quality, observability, and writing clean, testable code.

Key Performance Areas

• Translate data into valuable insights that inform decisions.
• Integrate and separate data feeds in order to map, produce, transform and test new data products.
• Develop fit-for-purpose, resilient, scalable, and future- proof data services to meet user needs.
• Produce data models and understand where to use different types of data models.
• Design and maintain the appropriate metadata repositories to enable the organisation to understand its data assets.
