Role Description

This role is responsible for monitoring and controlling the production process by allocating and managing resources (people and equipment) to attain the production targets. The role reports to the Mine Overseer. The role will carry a 2.15.1 appointment in assisting the Manager to execute responsibilities as placed on the Manager on the day to day running of operations

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Grade 12 or equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification
  • Blasting Certificate for underground hard rock or equivalent
  • Shiftboss Certificate
  • Minimum of 6 years’ underground mining experience at metalliferous mines, which must be in a mechanised mining development and stoping (Bord and Pillar) environment and 3 years’ underground supervisory experience as an appointed Shift Supervisor
  • Mine Overseer Certificate will be advantageous
  • Mine Managers Certificate will be advantageous
  • Mining Engineering Degree or B-Tech in Mining or equivalent qualification will be advantageous

Job Requirements

  • Enforce compliance and adherence to Health and Safety Policy, standards, procedures, and rules
  • Plan activities in accordance with operational and maintenance schedules and allocate resources as required
  • Responsible for planning, controlling, leading, and organising repairs and breakdowns
  • Communicate operational information and changes to relevant stakeholders to minimise delays in ore extraction or development progress
  • Order and monitor material levels to ensure sufficient availability according to operational needs
  • Responsible for planning and organising crews who are under the direct control of the miner
  • Co-ordinate shift hand over by checking log sheets, physical mining activities, and communicate to relevant subordinates
  • Responsible for conducting planned task/job observations
  • Co-ordinate and manage labour structures and plan required relevant training
  • Co-ordinate and monitor mining activities to ensure adherence to mine standards and operational targets
  • Supervise and ensure that blasting operations such as controlling of explosives, preparing working face for blasting, charging up of face and sites, conducting blasting, and treating misfires are executed according to standards and procedures
  • Perform administrative duties according to legal requirements
  • Perform accident and incident investigation(s) according to organisational standards
  • Responsible for ensuring proper ventilation underground
  • Perform risk assessments (Activity Based and Mini)
  • Provide subject matter expertise and skills in the area of responsibility; advising on solutions to enhance or ensure the effectiveness of the department/section
  • Responsible for ensuring that the working place is safe

Skills Required

  • Good verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills in English
  • Sound planning, leading, and organisational abilities
  • Computer Literacy and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Knowledge and understanding of the disciplinary procedures
  • Sound Decision Making Skills
  • Valid Driver’s Licence
  • Trackless Mining machinery and trackless mining best practices
  • Bord and Pillar and Conventional Stoping Mining
  • Underground mining practices and related operations environment
  • Safety, Health, and Environmental Legislation and standards applicable to underground mining
  • Understanding of the mechanised development cycle
  • Knowledge of Mining systems
