Position overview
- The main purpose of the role is to support, maintain and troubleshoot SQL, develop SQL reports and support all integrated applications.
Key Responsibilities:
- Database Management and Maintenance. Responsibilities include but are not limited to.
- Manage, maintain, and administer SQL databases to ensure high performance, availability, and security.
Backup and Recovery: Responsibilities include but are not limited to.
- Ensure all database servers are backed up in a way that meets the business’s Recovery Point Objectives (RPO).
- Test backups to ensure the business can meet Recovery Time Objectives (RTO).
Troubleshooting and outage Management: Responsibilities include but are not limited to.
- Troubleshoot SQL Server service outages as they occur, including after-hours and weekends.
Performance Tuning and Optimization: Responsibilities include but are not limited to.
- Monitor and optimize database performance.
- When performance issues arise, determine the most effective way to increase performance, including hardware purchases, server configuration changes, or index/query changes.
Security Management: Responsibilities include but are not limited to.
- Ensure database security by managing access controls, encryption, and monitoring for unauthorized activities.
Database Design and Architecture: Responsibilities include but are not limited to.
- Design and implement database structures to support application development and ensure data consistency and integrity.
Disaster Recovery: Responsibilities include but are not limited to.
- Develop and test disaster recovery plans to minimize data loss and downtime in case of a major incident.
Instillation and Configuring: Responsibilities include but are not limited to.
- Install and configure SQL Servers, including deploying database change scripts provided by third-party vendors.
Monitoring and Reporting: Responsibilities include but are not limited to.
- Configure SQL Server and Monitoring Server Application utilities to minimize false alarms.
- Continuously monitor database health, performance, and usage, providing regular reports to stakeholders.
Technology Knowledge and Integration: Responsibilities include but are not limited to.
- Maintain knowledge of Analysis Services, Integration Services, and Reporting Services.
- Document the company’s database environment in the company’s EDMS system.
- Configure, test, and manage changes in integrated systems.
Occupational Health and Safety: Responsibilities include but are not limited to.
- Responsible for compliance with the department.
Education and Experience
- Matric or NQF equivalent.
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum 2 years prior experience in a similar role.
- Basic SQL query writing and database management experience.
- Exposure to relational database management systems.
Technical experience in:
SQL query writing and optimization.
- Stored procedures, functions, triggers, and indexing.
- Database Administration Tools.
- Performance tuning and optimization.
- Backup and recovery processes.
- Security and compliance procedures.
Skills and Competencies
- Strong attention to detail and excellent observation skills.
