  • Will regularly inspect components related to vehicle tires, for example, rims, hubs, studs and nuts to check for excessive wear or cracks, damage to the beads, performing periodic tests on the tires.

Minimum Requirements    

  • Qualification: Transport maintenance/professional technical training in mechanics / Minimum requirements Grade 12/Matric
  • At least 3 years in the same or similar position
  • Must have tyre fitter experience 
  • Must have a valid drivers license
  • Knowledge of mandatory health and safety standards at work
  • Proactive, confident, assertive
  • Ability to work under pressure and deliver within working hours

Duties & Responsibilities    

  • Responsible for ensuring that tyres used by vehicles, trucks or tractors, and heavy equipment are in good condition for the road and will ensure the safety of vehicle users.
  • Responsible for ensuring that tyres use on vehicles,truck tractors and trailers are in good condition and ensure that all wheelnuts has been torque and pressures corrected.
  • Responsible for the appropriate and more ecological disposal of scrap metal and must repair and replace vehicle components related to tires, whether inner tubes, rims, wheels or others.
  • Responsible to mount and de-mound tyres in rims, make sure rims has no cracks or any visible demages.
  • Ensure that tyres are inflated as specified by their manufacturers, you will stock tyres weekly.
  • Inflate fitted tyres in tyre safety cage. Inflate tyres to Unitrans Supply Chain Solutions requirements as state in tyre policy.
  • Carrying out road repairs.
  • Road tyre repairs to be done by breakdown vehicle and pre-fitted tyres to use on road breakdowns.
  • Rotate tyres to different positions on vehicles using hand tools.
  • Rotate tyres to different positions on the vehicles by using correct hand/airtools with the correct PPE.
  • Seal punctures in tubeless tyres by inserting adhesive material and expanding rubber plugs into drilling with hand tools.
  • Do onsite puncture repairs by using the correct tools(tyre buffer) glue and gaitors to ensure good lasting repairs. Apply rubber cement to polished tire casings before the vulcanization process.
  • Buff the defective areas of the inner tubes using scrapers.
  • Glue boots (tyre patches) over ruptures in tyre casings using rubber cement.
  • Inspect tire casings for defects such as punctures and tears.
  • Raise vehicles with hydraulic jacks and tressles to assure safe working space.
  • Reinstall the wheels on the vehicles after completing the job.
  • All wheelnuts to be torqued after job is done.
  • Separate tube tires from wheels using rubber hammers and metal bars or mechanical tire changers.
  • Fit and strip tyres from rims with the correct tyre levers and beadbreaker(tube tipe/tubeless)and rubber hammers.
  • Unscrew the vehicle’s wheels and remove them, using tire irons and other hand and power tools.
  • Unscrew wheels from hubs by using the correct impact wrench and Torque all wheels after each job.
  • Make sure all tyres are branded.
  • Make sure all wheels got wheel indicators(checkpoints)on and each valve a valve cap.
  • Locate punctures in tubeless tires by visual inspection or by immersing inflated tires in water baths and watching for air bubbles.
