Requirements

Minimum Requirements 

  • Grade 12
  • Degree (B.Sc or B-Tech) in Environmental Management or Environmental Science.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years post-qualification experience in Waste Management, with at least two (2) years at the supervisory/ line management level.
  • Experience in the application of environmental and OHS laws, policies and strategies.
  • Valid Code 08 (B) driver’s licence.

Knowledge of

  • Understanding of environmental issues, relevant legislation and international best practices within a Protected Area.
  • Effective Team Player and Effective Self-Management.
  • Proven experience with management of waste operations, compliance; monitoring, auditing and reporting;
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) (English).
  • Good working knowledge of MS Office.
  • Good team-working; networking and influencing skills.

Responsibilities

Operational Planning and Management

  • Set key performance goals and align operational plans with the strategic objectives of SANParks.
  • Ensure financial, operational, and environmental targets are met.
  • Manage operations and maintenance of waste management sites to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Manage operational performance and implement improvements.
  • Ensure that waste operations comply with relevant legislation including SANParks Policies, SOPs and guidelines.
  • Undertake audits at waste sites to solicit compliance.
  • Manage upgrade, refurbishment and replacement of waste management infrastructure and equipment.

Environmental Compliance

  • Ensure all operations comply with environmental legislation, such as NEMWA.
  • Report waste volumes generated and recovered on the legislated system such as SAWIC.
  • Develop initiatives to minimize, reduce and recover waste in the KNP.
  • Promote sustainable waste practices in KNP.
  • Implement, monitor and report on waste management programmes.

Occupational, Health and Safety

  • Ensure that all operations comply with the Occupational, Health and Safety Act and regulations.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and risk assessments.
  • Participate in SHE Committee meetings and audits.

Financial Management

  • Manage operational budget.
  • Asset management as per SANParks Policies and SOPs.
  • Manage contracts and MoUs/MoAs.

Human Resource Management

  • Management of Staff and administration
  • Plan for internal and external training of staff
