Purpose of the Role
- The Environment Officer is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing policies, procedures and programmes that ensure Teraco’ adherence to environmental legislation, delivery of its Environmental Management Program and promotion of sustainability best practices within the organisation. This position is also responsible for improving and sustaining the organisations ISO14001:2015 Environmental Management System.
Main function of the Job
- Responsible for ensuring all Teraco’s operations are and remain certified to the ISO 14001:2015 standard
- Responsible for leading and implementing Teraco’s Zero Waste to Landfill project / programme and ensuring Teraco achieves Zero Waste certification by 2026, and maintains the certification.
- Establish and set environmental priorities, targets and design programmes in accordance with Teraco’s sustainability objectives to minimise the impact of Teraco’s operations on the environment.
- Implement, update (as required), and monitor the national environmental monitoring and auditing plan for all environmental inspections, and audits.
- Conduct and or coordinate (as required) environmental inspections and audits across Teraco sites, providing guidance and influence in changing behaviour to achieve the company environmental objectives.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to drive continuous improvement in environmental performance and risk reduction within operations
- Compile, maintain / monitor and update (as required) the Environmental Aspects and Impacts Register, in consultation with site management and leadership.
- Implement and update (as required) the Environmental Management Improvement Action Plan and Environmental Tracker to monitor progress against Environmental KPI’s.
- Chair and minute the monthly environmental management meeting
- Drive environmental data collection and data management, check for accuracy thereof and prepare month end report’s reflecting environmental activities, Non Compliance Reports (NCR’s), incident / accidents, status on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), objectives, targets and/or any other matter related to the organisation’s Environmental Management Program.
- Investigate or participate as environmental SME in the organisation’s Environmental Incidents and/or accidents and timeously prepare associated investigation reports. Follow up and closed out of all environmental realated NCR and Corrective and Preventative Actions (CAPA’s).
- Ensure timely and accurate responses to client Requests For Information (RFIs), client environmental surveys and client environmental data reporting requests
- Lead initiatives to reduce water consumption intensity and improve water use effectiveness
- Ensure waste management and recycling programs are designed and implemented effectively by site management to reduce waste and improve resource efficiency
- Monitor and report on environmental metrics, incidents, and trends to senior leadership
- Develop and conduct ongoing environmental awareness training, and administrative tasks.
- Develop, implement, and update (as required) all Teraco environmental policies and procedures.
- Perform contractor Environmental Assessments as per of organisation’s contractor selection process.
- Represent the organisation on Environmental at scheduled Health and Safety meetings.
- Support Operational and Infrastructure Development Project’s Health and Safety Managers / officers with the integration of Environmental requirements in an integrated HSE Management System.
- Must be able to travel to national operational facilities and construction sites to conduct audits, inspections, training, verification of compliance with / to environmental policies, procedures and applicable legal / statutory requirements.
- Monitor and update the organisations environmental legal register and inform the organisation of any applicable impact of any change in law.
- Lead, plan and execute (in conjunction with Data Centre Managers) all National Operational Facilities emergency environmental mock drills.
- Grow into a subject-matter expert on data centre and technology-related environmental and sustainability topics / key ESG issue (climate resiliency, emissions, energy, water, waste etc.)
- Lead environmental reporting across both voluntary (e.g., GRI, Ecovadis) and regulatory frameworks, ensuring compliance with evolving environental requirements
- Support the development and communication of the Teraco’s environmental strategy, aligning with company, client and shareholder expectations and sustainability goals

Qualifications and Experience
- BSc Honours Degree in Environmental Management
- 4-7 Years of experience in the implementation and/ or maintenance of ISO14001:2015
- Working knowledge of sustainability programs specific to energy, environment and emissions and how they are interrelated (e.g. TCFD, CDP, GRI, The Greenhouse Gas Protocol, Science-based Targets Initiative, etc.)
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple workstreams with competing and sometimes urgent deadlines and experience influencing upwards to keep programs and projects moving
- Advanced MS Word and Excel,
- Certified Lead Auditor or Internal Auditor in ISO14001 with advance level of knowledge and understanding of the requirements of ISO14001:2015
- Root Cause Analysis Techniques
- Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment
- Intermediate Visio preferred, but not mandatory
